Toward the Implementation of a Sustainable Management Model

The city of Ifrane hosted a regional seminar on recreational fishing and sustainable development in the Middle Atlas region. The main objective was to conduct pilot actions to promote this sector and contribute to the management of fish resources.

Several representatives of recreational fishing associations and clubs recently gathered in Ifrane to discuss ways to implement, among other things, a sustainable management model for this sector, which is intended to become a lever for local development.

Participants in a seminar organized by the Royal Moroccan Federation of Recreational Fishing (FRMPL) under the theme "Fishing and the fish farming potential of the Fès-Meknès region: what contribution to sustainable development within the framework of the new regionalization?" indicated that the recreational fishing sector has seen constant growth in terms of the increasing number of members and associations. They noted that fishing in Morocco plays a preponderant role in the revival of several activities related to tourism, the environment, and society.

On this occasion, they emphasized the flagship project designed by the FRMPL in consultation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-Med), and with the valuable support of the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification.

For the president of the FRMPL, Mohamed Abouabdellah, this project, titled "Ecological fishing in the service of ecotourism and the preservation of the biodiversity of Lake Aguemguem," and funded to the tune of approximately 315,000 DH by IUCN-Med, will allow practitioners and associations working in the fishing field to move from a stage of assistance and consumption to a stage of professionalism and added value production.

After highlighting the importance of this project, Mohamed Abouabdellah specified that this project represents a platform for exchange and capacity building among all members of the Federation and other stakeholders, namely local authorities, institutes, and civil society.

The participants also highlighted the commendable efforts of the Fly Fishing Club of the Middle Atlas, which has recently benefited from a budget granted by IUCN-Med in partnership with the High Commission for Water and Forests and the fight against desertification. This is for the first time in Morocco to create an Eco-labeled "rando-fishing" fishing circuit.

This project, with a budget of 300,000 DH, will enhance the Guigou site to offer fishing enthusiasts and their families welcoming and attractive spaces for the enjoyment of sustainable fishing. MAP
